We often hear that democratic leadership is a good way to run a country. The theory goes that a country’s leaders are elected because they can be trusted to handle the affairs of the state. That is a valuable lesson. However, researchers have discovered that the most successful form of leadership – the democratic leadership style – results in higher productivity, better political participation, and greater group morale. In other words, it is kind of a “catch-22.” Why is this so?
One of the biggest factors that contribute to this finding is rooted in psychology. People are more likely to do what is right if they feel like they can get some sort of benefit from doing so. In a democratic leadership environment, people know that they will be heard, that their views will be reflected, and that the decisions they make will have some kind of consequence. These are important psychological attributes for human beings to have. If you remove these things from a situation, people simply will not take the actions required to bring about desired results.
Another aspect that came to light in the study of participative leadership was that the more diverse the population, the more varied the perspectives of the people were. If there are numerous viewpoints and differing opinions on any given issue, then an opinion will be more likely to exist among many rather than among a single viewpoint. In a democratic leadership style, leaders must always try to include all perspectives when approaching a certain issue or problem. It is only when all perspectives are represented that meaningful change can occur and progress can be made.
A third aspect that may come to mind when considering the relationship between Twitter and democratic leadership is that it can be difficult for people to organize things when everyone has access to Twitter. The organizational aspects of Twitter are best handled by using different applications. For instance, there are apps for organizing one’s Twitter account, such as Twollo and TweetDeck. Organizing people and obtaining collective information is also possible through the use of groups like slack groups and twitters.
Democratic Leadership Style
One other attribute of Twitter that makes it very appealing as a democratic leadership style lies in the fact that information travels very quickly. In fact, information can spread at rates of speed much faster through Twitter than through any other medium. This speed allows leaders to disseminate information to their followers almost instantly. As a leader, you have a unique opportunity to connect with your followers and get their feedback. Knowing what your followers think is a valuable part of being a good leader.
On the flip side, Twitter has some drawbacks to its democratic leadership style. Twitter tends to make decisions through a majority vote, which may not yield the desired result because a small percentage of group members may hold back the decision-making process until a significant number of group members have voted to do so. Another drawback of using Twitter is that there is no way for a group of people to verify facts or obtain additional information prior to making a decision. For this reason, facts that are made known through Twitter cannot be verified by the individuals involved, which opens the door to falsification.
There are, however, hybrid democratic leadership styles that combine aspects of both autocratic and democratic leadership styles. Hybrid models often utilize aspects of both styles, but there is a significant difference between these two leadership styles. In an autocratic leadership style, there is a single leader who makes the decisions. He or she generally enjoys a high degree of trust from the group that they lead. Because of this group accountability, they can implement and carry out the decisions of the group with relative ease.
Hybrid leaders, on the other hand, work better with smaller numbers of group members making collective decision-making. In these situations, there are often multiple leaders within a larger group, each with differing perspectives and power. These leaders can come from different groups of people, each with a diverse range of opinions and aspirations. Each hybrid leader works to balance the interests of each group and meet the needs of the diverse constituents that make up a group. This ability to work collectively allows these hybrid leaders the opportunity to influence and shape the way their democratic leadership style interacts with their various group members.
